Conservative Media Go On Attack After Release Of Obama's Long-Form Birth Certificate

April 27, 2011 4:20 pm ET — 146 Comments

Right-wing media responded to the release of President Obama's long-form birth certificate by attacking the president and claiming that certain questions surrounding the document remain unanswered. Below is a sampling of the early attacks by conservative media following the release of Obama's long-form birth certificate.

Obama Released Birth Certificate To "Distract" From Bernanke's Press Conference

Beck "Theory": Obama Released Birth Certificate Today To Distract From Bernanke Press Conference. From the April 27 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: The President of the United States is about to speak shortly. Stations, we will carry it live, live, live on this program. Gas prices, sure, out of control. Middle East, sure, on fire. Ben Bernanke going to give the first press conference for the Fed for the first time in 97 years today, but today is the day the birth certificate is released. You have got to be kidding me. Are we really down to this? We're really down to this? The birth certificate? I mean, it was bad when we were down to the, you know, Final Four in the brackets, but now we've got the birth certificate talk and the president is going to hold a press conference.

Alright, first of all let me just tell you my theory: this is because Bernanke is speaking today. Watch the markets move today. Why is the Fed -- this is what I've been trying to figure out -- why is the Fed holding a press conference for the first time in 97 years? Why? Something is coming gang, something is coming. Now at the same day, the same time, why is the President of the United States choosing today to release the birth certificate?

[...]

BECK: There is no way this is being released today for no reason. There's no way. They've had this for two years -- three years this has been going on. This rumor was started by Hillary Clinton. This was a Clinton tactic. This was --

STU BURGUIERE (producer): The birther stuff?

BECK: Yes.

BURGUIERE: Yeah, I mean, people forget that because it was in the primary. That's when it was all coming out.

BECK: This was a Clinton tactic. So now they've had it since Clinton. They could have done this since Clinton. So why? [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 4/27/11]

Palin: "Don't Let The WH Distract You W/ The Birth Crt From What Bernanke Says Today." In an April 27 post on her Twitter feed, Fox News contributor Sarah Palin wrote:

Obama Took Too Long To Release His Birth Certificate

NRO's Goldberg: The Release Raises A "Perplexing Question": "Why Did The WH Take Such Sweet Time Releasing" Obama's Birth Certificate? In an April 27 National Review Online blog post titled, "The New Burning Question," Jonah Goldberg wrote:

I haven't studied the just released PDF of Obama's birth certificate. But assuming there's nothing in there about a birthmark that resembles the numbers "666" or about how his father worked for the KGB and -- of course -- assuming that the font in question matches typewriters of the time (Let's get Dan Rather on that): I figure this puts the birther thing to bed once and for all. Good.

But it does raise the perplexing question: If this was possible all along, why did the WH take such sweet time releasing it? Could it be that this White House, continuing a tactic used by Democrats for years, actually liked being able to cast their opponents -- often through guilt by association -- as paranoid nuts? No, that couldn't possibly be it. [National Review Online, The Corner, 4/27/11]

Fox's Kilmeade: "Why Did The President Wait So Long To Put The Birther Issue To Rest?" In an April 27 post on his Twitter feed, Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade wrote:

Daily Caller: "Dear Mr. President: What Took You So Long?" From an April 27 article by Daily Caller congressional reporter Jonathan Strong headlined, "Dear Mr. President: What took you so long?":

President Obama released his long form birth certificate Wednesday, only after years of speculation about the issue metastasized into a major political phenomenon he could no longer ignore.

But the question remains: Why did Obama, who has proudly vowed his administration would be the "most open and transparent in history," wait so long?

[...]

Certainly, conspiracy theorists who peddled lies and half-truths on the issue - and there were many - are at fault for the explosion of the issue.

But did Obama provide them cover in failing to fully address a simple document request for over two years? [Daily Caller, 4/27/11]

Geller: "What Took So Long? And Why?" In an April 27 Atlas Shrugs post titled, "What Took So Long?" far-right blogger Pamela Geller wrote: "Today Obama announced he would finally release the long form of his birth certificate. As Obama continues to toy with and taunt the American people, you have to scratch your head and say, what took so long? And why? [Atlas Shrugs, 4/27/11]

It May Not Even Be Obama's Real Birth Certificate

FoxNews.Com: "White Houses Releases What It Says Is Obama's Long-Form Birth Certificate." On April 27, FoxNews.com posted the banner headline "White House Releases What It Says Is President Obama's Long-Form Birth Certificate."

  • FoxNews.com subsequently replaced the original banner headline with a headline that reads: "White House Releases Obama Birth Certificate."

WND Placed Scare Quotes Around "Birth Certificate." An April 27 WorldNetDaily article by Bob Unruh put scare quotes around the words "birth certificate" in the headline. The headline reads: "White House releases Obama 'birth certificate.' " [WND, 4/27/11]

Birth Certificate Raises Significant Questions, Leaves Others Unanswered

WND's Farah: "There Are Still Dozens Of Other Questions Concerning This Question Of Eligibility That Need To Be Resolved." In an April 27 article, WorldNetDaily's Bob Unruh wrote:

Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND, the only news agency that has waged a relentless investigative campaign on questions swirling around the Obama's eligibility for nearly three years, was elated at the turn of events.

"We're gratified that our work has begun to pay off," he said. "The certificate of live birth is an absolutely vital foundation for determining constitutional eligibility of any president. We look forward to reviewing it like so many other Americans do at this late date. But it is important to remember there are still dozens of other questions concerning this question of eligibility that need to be resolved to assure what has become a very skeptical public concerning Barack Obama's parentage, his adoption, his citizenship status throughout his life and why he continues to cultivate a culture of secrecy around his life." [WND, 4/27/11]

Prison Planet Highlights Farah Quote That Birth Certificate "Raises As Many Questions As It Answers." In an April 27 article on Alex Jones' Prison Planet website headlined, "Obama Birth Certificate 'Raises As Many Questions As It Answers,' " Prison Planet editor and writer Paul Joseph Watson quoted Farah as stating: "It would be a big mistake for everyone to jump to a conclusion now based on the release of this document, which raises as many questions as it answers." Watson also wrote:

Despite some political commentators insisting that the White House release of what it claims to be Barack Obama's long form birth certificate represents the end of the "crazy birther fringe" movement, those who most fiercely pushed doubts surrounding the president's eligibility are not convinced.

While presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump welcomed the release of the document, he was quick to cast suspicion as to why it took so long and if the certificate was even genuine.

Trump said it was "amazing" that the document surfaced "all of a sudden" after he had begun asking questions about the controversy, adding that the certificate should be analyzed to determine its authenticity.

Indeed, the Smoking Gun website has already compiled a list of inconsistencies found in the document, including asking, "If the original document was in a bound volume (as reflected by the curvature of the left hand side of the certificate), how can the green patterned background of the document's safety paper be so seamless?"

[...]

Since the American people have been habitually lied to about everything under the sun, with trust in government at an all time low, a PDF file put out directly by the Obama administration itself isn't going to make the furore die down at all, and will only lead to claims that the document is a carefully crafted fake. Just once, just for giggles, couldn't the conservative media not respond in the most predictable way possible. How many of us have been saying that the long form of the BC would just lead to more lies and conjecture? On queue, the conservatives have reponded.

I have to agree with you on that CenterRight. It is a sad reality that there are fringe elements both left and right. The saddest part is that in times past the fringe elements were recognized for what they were, now, the media seemingly prefers to give them legitimacy.

Many people said nasty things about Bush II, but they had a reason to hate Bush II. He lied us into a war in Iraq that took tens of thousands of lives, including about 4,000 American lives. He gave us Guantanamo, the Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act, two wars off the books and unpaid for, unpaid for prescription drug plan, whopping deficits and national debt.

Although, I disagree with tone and practice of politics when it gets personal, at least the nastiness had a base in the factual performance of the President and Vice-President, not racism.

The left usually deals with the facts in their arguments and not rumor, innuendo, and lies to support their discussion.

I fail to see how being upset about Bush lying about the reasons for the war or the questionable way he was elected compares to this totally made up lie? The war was based on a lie that has pretty much been proven true and the american people should have filled the streets over that. The 2000 election is more debatable but at least there was something to debate as some fact were being checked. Obama being born in Hawaii is simply not debatable and seem to be deeply rooted in racism. He did not need to provide this I wish he wouldn't have it's ridculous.

The 2000 election is not debatable. A non partisan study was done following the election and found that indeed Gore had won Florida. However, by that time Bush had been president for 11 months. Can you imagine if it was Gore who had assumed the presidency this way? The right won't even accept losing when there are no questions involved.

This has become the false equivalency of record. Let's remember, George Bush's approval ratings after 9/11 were somewhere in the 80s. The math implies that this support included the left. Then Bush made a lot of bad decisions involving war, a crony cabinet, spying on citizens, torture, etc., and his approval ratings tanked. The math implies that this unopularity included the right.

In short, the opposition to Bush wasn't baseless -- he earned it. Obama was hit with a tsunami of false accusations beginning the day of his election. Rush Limbaugh was calling it the Obama recession before the White House movers were finished unpacking.

Now tell me how the criticism against him is just like the left's against Bush?

Infact MSNBC gives 3 hrs. daily to a conservative host. Faux primes their morning news cast with the lead in from Faux and Friends. Bush and Obama were nowhere near as bad in foreign policy as the presidents of the 70s: Nixon, Ford, and Carter. A decade of ineptitude with only Nixon's relations with China, and Carter's peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, were the only major foreign policy wins that decade. The rest was a mess from the Vietnam War to the Iran hostage crisis.

Plame was outed by a lefty, Richard Armitage. Scooter Libby was convicted of perjury for unknowingly giving information proven to be false. MMFA actually confirmed these facts by ignoring them in their write-up of Hannity's Bias special.

"Scooter Libby was convicted of perjury for unknowingly giving information proven to be false." - Rog

Wow. You actually believe that, don't you? You can actually convince yourself of things that are demonstrably, easily proven false in order to justify your ideology. You need help.

Plame was outed by a lefty, Richard Armitage. Scooter Libby was convicted of perjury for unknowingly giving information proven to be false. MMFA actually confirmed these facts by ignoring them in their write-up of Hannity's Bias special.

Tangled Webs, writer James Stewart reveals:

Karl Rove leaked Valerie Plame’s identity on two occasions, Stewart finds. Then, according to previously secret testimony by President Bush, he lied about it—to the president. With all the rumors circulating about Rove, President Bush called his “dear friend” and confronted him about whether he had “any involvement” in the disclosure of Plame’s identity. Rove’s reply: No way, sir. President Bush was satisfied. “If Rove said he didn’t do it, then he didn’t do it,” the president said. “If he was involved, he’d tell me. I trust him.” page 201-202

President Bush’s testimony about Karl Rove was awkward for investigators. They already knew Rove had leaked Plame’s identity. He had told the FBI as much. And Bush had promised “consequences” for the leaker, no matter who he or she was. Would he fire Karl Rove? Before official news broke of Libby’s indictment, prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald delivered a cover letter to the president with all the information he would need to make a decision. To Fitzgerald, the fact that President Bush was employing someone who had divulged the name of a covert agent was a national-security concern, so he invoked a rarely used exception to grand jury secrecy and hand delivered the letter to Bush’s lawyer, who mordantly joked that his client “could use a new staff.” Bush never responded. Rove stayed on until 2007. page 223

In George W. Bush’s recent memoir, Vice President Dick Cheney is angry after his boss opts not to pardon Scooter Libby. “I can’t believe that you’re going to leave a soldier on the battlefield,” Cheney reportedly growled. Could his discontent stem from the fact that he was responsible for Libby’s crimes, having told the senior adviser to leak the name of CIA agent Valerie Plame? Both Libby and Cheney told investigators that “it’s possible” that Libby had acted under orders from the vice president; neither could remember for sure, but according to previously undisclosed FBI notes, Libby said he “may” have asked Cheney, “Do you want me to get something out [on Plame]?” That’s why special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald told that court that there’s a “cloud over the vice president.” It’s also, according to Stewart, an explanation for Cheney’s forceful push for a pardon: a guilty state of mind. page 178, 195 & 196

Bush got away with all of it and more, so don't give us that "well they did the same thing to George Bush".

He gave them what they wanted, and that effectively lets all the air out of their proverbial balloon. Now what?

Nope, not "what it says is...", they released it.

            Took a look at the site (in the words of Lucy "Get the Disinfectant!"). Astoundingly stupid. For example, they have their bumper sticker/posters slogans and one states;

"Voting for someone because he's black is as racist as voting against someone because he's black"

            Then when you scroll through three other slogans you come to;

I was wondering if you noticed the same thing I did about the presidents remarks today, how he was clearly following the instructions of a certain poster here on proper troll-handling etiquette.

That is, he de-bunked them, mocked them ONCE ( Not twice, not thrice) and moved on. Somewhere, somebody is probably feeling very satisfied at her influence on the president.

Her comment is a little too Palinesque for me. I see she doesn't like you or simple sentences.

But how can you fault her reasoning, an anonymous poster insults wingnuts and "it's the same as the radical Jihadis call 'infidels' and WANT to MURDER US."

Thanks, WK ! I'm positively beaming. I don't know if I've ever seen a person go to such effort to put themselves on the cross.

A joke about wingnuts having the same sense of time and history as a dog goes directly to my trying to dehumanize right wingers... to make it easier to kill them !

I like that she's trying to smear this site for my comment that she didn't understand. Once she added the detail that this is a sight where right wingers are called Nazis, it was an easy hop to comparing noticing righties having bad memories to The Holocaust.

I'm sure she'd be just as outraged if her comrades ever did anything as hateful... you know, like saying " Demo-RATS", "parasites" or "Vermin".

I posted a reply there, but I have a feeling it will be "under review" for a while. That little Martyr Party doesn't want any crashers.

Absolutely. Trump congratulates himself for being 100% wrong. The release of the birth certificates proves that Trump was lying when he claimed he was having someone investigate Obama's birth, lying when he claimed that they were finding amazing stuff, lying that there was something on the certificate that he couldn't "reveal at this time", and lying when he claimed the birth certificate was missing. A carnival barker, I believe Obama called him. About right.

Jonah Goldberg: But it does raise the perplexing question: If this was possible all along, why did the WH take such sweet time releasing it? Could it be that this White House, continuing a tactic used by Democrats for years, actually liked being able to cast their opponents -- often through guilt by association -- as paranoid nuts? No, that couldn't possibly be it. [National Review Online, The Corner, 4/27/11]

And if this was the case then what does it say about Obama's opponents that they were so easily duped, Goldberg?

        Why did they wait?

Because the state of Hawaii had said over and over again that they wouldn't release those documents, per state law, to anyone, even the President of the USA.

Then Obama's lawyer said - it'll help you stop all the inquiries you're currently getting - and that seemed to be the key to the state officials saying "one time, and one time only, we'll release this document. Never again."

I note that many of the comments are to question why he waited so long. My answer to that would be that he never thought so many people could be so stupid for so long. I think he took too long--to shut these people up. Why now? Just to give Trump some bonafides with the GOP? So he'll win the nomination? Or help some other more insane GOP candidate to run against Obama? That MIGHT be a winning, rational strategy--use their worst weaknesses against them--but why even bother?

I think Obama should have done this before he was elected, or--OR--never. Because they will never, ever stop, no matter what he does. They'll just make something else up from whole cloth. And basing some sort of political strategy on the inevitable ludicrous claims against Obama, because he's black and Democratic, is useless. It's not 11th dimensional chess.

It's re-acting, not acting. But I guess Obama just got sick of it.

Well, you're sort of correct on one point - Obama should have never done it to shut up the birthers. But he didn't do it to shut up the birthers. He's smart, and he knew that even this wouldn't shut them up.

It's not "reacting". It's proactively calling out the media for their shameful behavior, just like he's avoided giving Fox News too much attention from his White House.

I'm not buying these "why did he take so long to produce the birth certificate" arguments. They're just a way for the wingnuts to salvage any semblance of being on the right side of this.

The simple fact is that Obama produced a birth certificate in 2008!

A valid, legal, legitimate birth certificate. The release of the "long form" only further confirms this.

How was he to know that stupid people wouldn't accept it? That they would fall for some laughable conclusive "internet analysis" of forgery?

I swear, wingnuts are so easily led.
