NRO's Goldberg: "Why Did The WH Take Such Sweet Time Releasing" Obama's Birth Certificate?

April 27, 2011 10:23 am ET by Media Matters staff

In an April 27 National Review Online blog post titled, "The New Burning Question," Jonah Goldberg wrote:

I haven't studied the just released PDF of Obama's birth certificate. But assuming there's nothing in there about a birthmark that resembles the numbers "666" or about how his father worked for the KGB and -- of course -- assuming that the font in question matches typewriters of the time (Let's get Dan Rather on that): I figure this puts the birther thing to bed once and for all. Good.

But it does raise the perplexing question: If this was possible all along, why did the WH take such sweet time releasing it? Could it be that this White House, continuing a tactic used by Democrats for years, actually liked being able to cast their opponents -- often through guilt by association -- as paranoid nuts? No, that couldn't possibly be it.

Is it really possible to "cast" people as paranoid nuts when those people are in fact paranoid nuts?

Because the state of Hawaii couldn't release it, and they had no provisions for making copies of the record for the White House to release it, but they had already released the short form and sworn to the validity of the long form and they thought this would be good enough since the official short form is accepted by the State Department as proof of citizenship for obtaining a passport. But no, it's not good enough for the fraking Birthers!

What amazes me is how the media have neglected to explain the basic procedures and practices for obtaining birth records in Hawaii. I researched this back in 2008 and know more about the subject than what I've read in the media. But they get paid to do that...

Exactly. Goldberg is asking the wrong question.

In 2008, Obama DID release a birth certificate. Only the lunatic wingnuts thought it was a forgery.

So the White House "actually liked being able to cast their opponents -- often through guilt by association -- as paranoid nuts?"

This is incredible! They ARE paranoid nuts! The White House didn't make them that way! You can't blame the White House for the raving lunatics that make up a good portion of the GOP.

Why don't you do a little research, you moron...or at least read the White House statement?

Obama could not order the State of Hawaii to release a copy of this original document that the state maintained in its records. All that Hawaii was obliged to do was issue its current standard "certificate of live birth", duly certified, which Obama obtained and posted in July, 2008. Finally, the State of Hawaii now states that it has made an exception because of the controversy and large demand for the document released today.

Bintxie, if I'm going to call someone an idiot, it really doesn't take an awful lot to make sure the person you're calling an idiot is the person you meant to call an idiot.

Mistakes on blogs that profess to be all about factual information I guess are okay by you, but it seems to me one should have their wits about them when they go around calling other people idiots. Are is that setting the bar too high for this place?

Jonah Goldberg has a great book out, it's called
                Liberal Fascism.
You should check it out from your local library if the waiting list isn't still too long. Or it's out in paperback now, too. Very popular. Very informative.

No, that book of fiction pretty much solidified my opinion of this son of a media wh*re media wh*re.

That book is actually NOT popular. The initial sales reports were the result of bulk sales. It sat on the shelves of our local booksellers (and I live in one of the top ten most conservative areas in the country, according to an annual AOL poll . . . voted 82% for GWB in 2004 and 76% for McCain in 2008) for months and gathered dust. It went on the bargain books stacks where it sat until it finally sold for .99/copy. You know why? Because we are also a city with conservative Christian-related universities. The people here are too intelligent to read and believe Goldberg's perversion of history.

BTW, not exactly sure how I feel about someone who frequents a racist website called "www.wehateamerica.com." Kind of disgusting.

What a shame. Releasing the document actually allows those who were being spotlighted by their own ignorance and possibly racism to slink away and use other, perhaps more legitimate wails, to try and rejoin the ranks of the sane.

This seems more like another capitulation by Obama than anything else. The man gives in to anybody and everybody. Why? Why give these ignorant s.o.b.s the time of day? Why not let the spotlight continue to shine on then, to help demonstrate the absolute lunacy and stupidity of so many?

Actually, this was very smart. This issue had been gathering steam simply to divert attention from the fact that the polls are showing that the American people are opposed to the GOP's budget plans AND that Republicans are getting trashed, a la health care reform, at town hall meetings daily. The media, as has been their wont of late, follows the fun story instead of the important story. Obama called the media out for this today . . . in fact, he called Chuck Todd out by name and said, "you know better than this."

        Pretty astute.

No, it wasn't, you dipwad. Your lack of logic is astounding. The faux conservatives on Fox/hate talk radio kept feeding you this crap knowing that your little authoritarian follower brain could not process it in a logical manner. The President has had an American passport since he was a child . . . a birth certificate is required. The presidential candidates' backgrounds are investigated by the FBI. Don't you think they would have prevented Obama from being President? And, finally, the President produced a copy of his legitimate birth certificate issued to and forwarded to him upon his request in 2008.

This was NEVER a Constitutional issue for anyone. The Constitutional requirements had been met and had been proven to have been met. This was a racist issue. Obama was being questioned simply because he's darker than most presidents and he has a funny name.

          You're an idiot.

They did wait a long time since Hillary's camp first brought up the issue. Liberals reasoned that this was because they knew it helped Obama and made Republicans look desperate.

This showing makes that reasoning false.

What is your theory now of why he waited, and why now, and not later when it could've helped him more?

It should never have gone this far because it is ridiculous on its face. And it won't make any difference anyway. The birthers haven't accepted all the other evidence, why will this be any different. The WH is arguing with a group of people who considers "Nuh uh!" to be its debate tactic ace-in-the-hole.

Oh, and to your second question (why he didn't wait until later), I don't have an answer for that. As I stated in another post, I would have waited until deep into the 2012 campaign to release it. It would have left a birther candidate scrambling for a new outrageous outrage at the last minute.

Imagine asking a coworker, "I demand to see evidence that you really work here." The coworker laughs, but you're serious. The coworker points out that she has an office, that people remember hiring her, and finally points to a pay stub. But you demand real proof: you want the contract. How are you supposed to work with her if you don't even know that she's really a fellow employee? You're not asking for something irrelevant to her job. No, what could be more relevant than her status in the company? And you have a right to know that your so-called coworkers really are coworkers.

So you start investigating. You call people in HR. They claim she's an employee, but they won't release her contract to you. This only raises more suspicions. You write a book called, "Where's the Contract?: The Case that Carol in the Office near the Copier on the 3rd Floor is not a Real Employee". It's coming out next month.

Now your coworker is tired of this game, and has H.R. dig up her contract. Your response? "Why didn't she just release it earlier if she had nothing to hide?" You start asking people for their theories. Why didn't she just end this long ago when she clearly could have? Was she trying to discredit you?...

So, hoosier, why do you think Carol waited, and why now, and not later when it could have helped her more?

hey idiot, i think they waited because it was against the law for them to release it, but stupid birthers just wouldnt let go until it got to the point that their stupid questioning and ridiculous non belief was getting in the way of actually running a country.
when a president has to ask for exceptions to the law just to prove something as stupid as this, there is something fundamentally wrong, and its fundamentally wrong on the side of the conservatives

Yes, hoosier, the real question is why Obama made you guys make such fools of yourself. Obama should be ashamed of himself because of the complete morons you guys made of yourself. I love this line of defense. Please, carry on.

Indeed. We may never truly know how Obama managed to make the birthers and those who supported and embraced them look like unhinged paranoids driven by barely sublimated racial anxiety. He probably used voodoo or African witchcraft or something. Somebody should really look into Obama's background to find out, don't you think?

Yet another reason I am a firm believer that these Beckers and fox news devotees are only a couple of incidents away from becoming the urine soaked street corner barker I walk pass on my way into work each day. Actually, his beliefs probably have more substance to them.

BTW, anyone notice throughout this site when MM taks about complex issues you never see bouldertroll commenting? This person only seems to voice their opinion on issues that are relatively unimportant and simple to follow. That's just like right. They love simple issues because for them it's like candy. It goes down easy and them makes them sleepy.

Why? Because he had already produced everything necessary to prove his citizenship and his birth in Hawaii. Idiots like you wouldn't shut up. The news media would be foolish if they kept covering these stories now . . . which is why the birth certificate was produced and Obama shamed the media, including Chuck Todd, specifically, today. The current wave of birther stories were a diversion from the town hall meetings and the polls which are showing that the majority of Americans are NOT pleased with the GOP's handling of budget issues and Ryan's proposals.

Now we'll see the (false) questions of why it took so long as a way to blame Obama for conservative stupidity.

Unbelievable. Obama couldn't make you morons look like paranoid nuts if YOU WEREN'T PARANOID NUTS.

But I guess you can't smear Obama with the whole birther thing, so something else will have to fill the void.

How WND, Jerome Corsi, Bishop McRae, et al retain any credibility is a mystery to me. But I'm sure their mindless drooling idiot followers will continue to stand by them.

Which of the wingnuts (or wingut trolls) will have the guts to admit to uncritically swallowing this nonsense and admit that, just maybe, WND, Corsi and the rest are not really to be trusted?

Now that Obama has released the "official" birth certificate (again), do you think the Nazis like Donald Trump and Sean Hannity will finally shut up?

In my opinion, I don't think so.

The President obviously had a more idealistic view than he should have.He thought what was done 2+ years ago was legally sufficient and would be seen as such by intelligent, patriotic, adults who were merely curious.I'm sure he has been disappointed by this new standard only extended to him and having never been required of any President or Presidential candidate.I'm sure the sheer racsim of it has opened his eyes to the depth of those attitudes that still exist in America today! I'm sure he now knows he will still be questioned and criticized even after releasing additional,non-essential information for birthers. Now that there is nothing being "hidden",who will apologize?Probaly no one.Certainly not Trump or Palin or Bachman or Limbaugh or Hannity or anyone that kept this sleaze campaign alive. He can only hope that there are enough sane, non racist citizens to look at issues and facts to make their statements at the 2012 ballot box!!!

It was. It was only the insane, moronic and those wishing to tear down this country who continued to raise the issue.

Could it be that this White House, continuing a tactic used by Democrats for years, actually liked being able to cast their opponents -- often through guilt by association -- as paranoid nuts?
Umm...stop acting like paranoid nuts? (Which, by the way, you're still doing here by suggesting Obama had some ulterior motive by not validating the racist witch hunt that is birtherism.)

Boulderdouche has gone silent. Maybe he had a test to take in his 11th grade class, or maybe he is stuck trying to understand the constitution and report back as I asked him to do.
